Sunlight is a clean renewable energy resource that has been used for many years. Solar water heating are systems meant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve fossil fuel resources, while cutting energy use and saving money on utility bills.

Systems can offset up to 75% of the natural gas, electricity or propane used by your current water heater.

Let’s first look at how a solar water heater works. Solar hot water systems are composed of solar energy collectors, a liquid system to move heat from the extractor to the storage. This system enables you to heat household hot water for a home or for commercial uses, for ex: energy input for buildings, room heating and cooling.

These systems are usually storage systems as well. Depending on the weather, they can heat up to 90% of your water, free of cost, by utilizing the sun’s energy.

The solar hot water system generally consists of a solar panel located on the roof, facing the north, to heat water, as well as an insulated storage tank to store your hot water. It is reliable doesn’t require much maintenance and will last up to 30 years.

According to Tucson Electric Power some of the benefits of solar water/space heating are:

• Produces no emissions and is replenished naturally

• Reduces greenhouse gases

• Saves the release of 2 lbs. of carbon dioxide (CO2) for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) produced

• Saves the use of one-half gallon of water for each kWh of solar energy produced

• Saves the release of other emissions that result from the burning of fossil fuels such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide or mercury

• Makes use of one of the planets greatest natural resources – sunshine

• Provides customers with options to reduce their electric bills.

• Is very cost effective with payback periods of as little as five years

We hope we gave you some great reasons to consider a solar water heater. Contact your local utility company to see if a solar water heater is right for you.
