I think the most important part of food storage is making sure your veggies have what they need. Store dry veggies, potatoes, apples etc. separate from wet veggies greens, carrots etc. Wet veggies are alive, they need hydration and air circulation. A good mesh veggie bag is perfect to buy/wash/store your greens in, but they need a daily rinse.
Root veggies want a dark dry environment. So keep wet in a separate crisper from the dry.

I work in the Tucson Water Public Information and Conservation Office. We have been helping Mayor Jonathan Rothschild on the National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, a friendly online competition among cities and towns across America.

Tucson is doing pretty well, for our first year (#7, so far). The competition runs through April 30. We need residents to continue pledging. Any chance you could post this information on your home page for the next couple weeks?

Here is the web page with all the info and a link to the pledge site:

Thank you.

Cotton muslin is a sustainable option for storing vegetables. The bags are breathable and washable, making them convenient to reuse.

I do not shop with plastic grocery bags or produce bags, only reusable ones. What other options do I have besides plastic in storing produce correctly?

This is good information to know. Some of it I didn't know, so I got to learn something new! However, I would like to see alternatives to storing your produce in so much plastic....what about "greener" options?

I always want to properly store my veggies, but never do. Usually just toss them in to the crisper draws. This week, I'll start with properly storing one of them and work from there. Thanks for the reminder.
