Greenify Your Memorial Day!
Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time for getting together with family and friends. It means that summer is on its way, the kids are getting ready to finish school, and neighborhood pools are officially opening. Get your summer started with these easy 3-day weekend party tips~
• Don’t get bugged– To keep bugs and those pesky mosquitoes away, try using a cup of sugar water at the edge of the party instead of sprays and candles
• Use solar lights and soy candles for outdoor lighting – If you want to light up the party after dark, buy solar lights that soak up energy from the sun during the day so that they don’t use any power when they are on at night. If you want some candle light, use soy wax or beeswax candles instead of the typical candle or tiki torches to decrease toxic pollution added to the air when the candles are lit.
• Buy organic, fair trade, and local food and drinks – Stay away from toxic pesticides and provide fair wages to farmers by buying organic, fair trade, and local food and drinks for this Memorial Day. Organic wine and beer are quickly becoming more common in grocery stores. If you want green cocktails, I highly recommend Veev liquor, a spirit made from the acai berry and distilled at a wind-powered plant. I like it with ice and a little club soda personally, it is quite refreshing, but there are a lot more recipes out there.
• Grilling– A solar powered grill is the most eco-friendly way to grill these days, but if that’s not an option for you opt for a grill that burns natural gas rather than charcoal, as it is cleaner. Clean up the grill with just soap and water and throw those chemical cleaners out!
• Your table-Make sure to use biodegradable utensils, bowls, and cups that create much less waste in your local landfill.
• Recycle– Keep a recycling and compost bins handy and make sure and let your guests know where they’re located.
• Trash-Use biodegradable trash bags to clean up any leftover trash.
Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!
