School Lunch Dilemma

Choosing between packing your child’s lunch and having them eat the cafeteria food at school can sometimes be daunting.

School lunches have improved over the years, both in taste and nutrition, with many serving healthier dishes, such as grilled chicken sandwiches and salads. But some still exceed recommendations for fat. In the typical school cafeteria, kids can still choose an unhealthy mix of foods, especially the less nutritious fare often available a la carte or in the vending machine. For instance, a child might decide to buy a hot dog, day after day.

A packed lunch isn’t automatically healthier than one you buy at school. If you pack chocolate cake and potato chips, that’s not a nutritious meal! But a packed lunch, if you do it right, does have a clear advantage. When you pack your child’s lunch, you can be sure it includes healthy food choices— stuff you know they’ll like.

We’ve discovered that not only can packing a child’s lunch be healthier, it can be “greener” too. We recently discovered Kids Konserve. They are urging families to cut down on waste created by school lunches, while teaching the importance of reuse. Toss out the baggies, fold up the foil. Using one of the Kids Konserve waste free lunch kits, we are empowering our kids to have a part in saving the environment. Many schools do not recycle, and the amount of trash produced by one child’s lunch alone creates 67 pounds of landfill waste in the average school year.

Packing your child’s lunch can be fun. We urge you to take a look at the Kids Konserve website. We think you’ll be impressed and we’re pretty sure your kids will too.
